Super Consumers Australia appoints Peter Kell as new Board Chair
Super Consumers Australia has appointed highly respected consumer advocate and former regulator Peter Kell as its new Board Chair.
Mr Kell brings decades of experience in consumer protection, financial services regulation and public policy. He has previously served as Deputy Chair of the Australian Securities and Investments Commission, Deputy Chair of the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission, and Chief Executive Officer of CHOICE.
Super Consumers Australia CEO Xavier O’Halloran welcomed Mr Kell’s appointment.
“Peter has spent his career working to make markets fairer, safer and more accountable for consumers,” Mr O’Halloran said.
“His deep experience in consumer advocacy, financial services and regulation will be invaluable as Super Consumers Australia continues to push for a superannuation system that works for people on low and middle incomes.
“Super is one of the most important financial systems in people’s lives. Australians deserve strong protections, clear information and a system that puts their interests first.”
Mr Kell said he was pleased to join Super Consumers Australia as Chair.
“Super Consumers Australia plays a vital role in standing up for people in a complex and compulsory system,” Mr Kell said.
“I look forward to working with the Board and team to advance practical reforms that improve retirement outcomes and strengthen consumer protections.”
Super Consumers Australia also thanked interim Chair Elissa Freeman for her leadership since former Chair Rod Stowe stepped down at the end of 2025.
“Elissa provided steady and thoughtful leadership during an important transition period,” Mr O’Halloran said.
“We are grateful for her contribution as interim Chair, and pleased that Super Consumers Australia will continue to benefit from her experience and commitment as a Board member.”
Super Consumers Australia also acknowledged the significant contribution of former Chair Rod Stowe.
“Rod has made an outstanding contribution to consumer protection over many decades, including through his leadership of Super Consumers Australia,” Mr O’Halloran said.
“We thank him for his service and the strong foundation he helped build for the organisation’s next phase.”
Super Consumers Australia also thanked outgoing Board member Brendan Coates, who concluded his term on 30 June 2026 after taking up a new role at Treasury.
“Brendan has brought deep expertise in economic policy, retirement incomes and superannuation to the Board over the past 12 months,” Mr O’Halloran said.
“We thank him for his valuable contribution and wish him well in his new role.”
Mr Kell’s appointment comes as Super Consumers Australia continues its work advocating for a safer and fairer superannuation system for all Australians.
